Tottenham manager news: Vincent Kompany says it is the ‘right decision’ to commit to Burnley

Vincent Kompany says it was “the right decision” to have signed a new contract with Burnley.

The Belgian committed his long-term future to the Clarets after leading them back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Despite having admirers at both Chelsea and Tottenham, the former Manchester City captain penned a five-year deal at Turf Moor after a stunning first season as a manager in the English game.

Monday’s 3-0 win over Cardiff City took Burnley over the 100-point mark with their final tally standing at 101, the most in the division since Leicester City won it with 102 almost a decade ago.

Kompany is understood have been considered by Chelsea as a potential option for the future as they close in on a move for Mauricio Pochettino, while Spurs have also had him on their shortlist.

Still, the 37-year-old insists that staying at Burnley was the best possible move for him.

“I still had three or four years left and it’s not something I went chasing but there is a pragmatic reason for signing the new deal," said Kompany.

"For my pathway, this is the right decision, but it helps when we try and recruit players.

"When I’m trying to convince a player to come here it’s easier just after I have signed a new deal.

"We have had a massive advantage planning for next season, because we have known about promotion of a long time.

"But we were going to lose that if people were waiting for me to come out with a statement."
