Tottenham manager news: Spurs urged to avoid Chelsea’s Frank Lampard mistake with ‘rush’ for target

Tottenham have been told to avoid appointing Vincent Kompany amid the “rush” to turn star players into managers at top clubs.

The Belgian has guided Burnley to the Championship title in his rookie year as an English football coach but Jamie Carragher believes it is “far too early” to bring him in at Spurs.

The examples of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard show to the ex-defender why clubs must show greater patience with young managers, even if Pep Guardiola is one boss who made the transition to the dugout in spectacular style.

“There are two managers, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, who are two of the best players we’ve seen in the Premier League era,” he explained on The Overlap.

“Kompany is the same, there’s almost this rush. I know Guardiola goes against the grain, I get that, there’s a rush to get the top players into the top jobs.

“I don’t know if it would be too early for Kompany at Tottenham but what’s this rush? Let him build his CV, his experience, his ups and downs. It didn’t go that well for him in Belgium [with Anderlecht], let’s be honest.

“I just think for managers there’s no rush to get these big-name footballers in at the top.

“Once it doesn’t go well there, where do you go? The building process for a manager is to eventually be there competing for trophies, the Champions League.

“I think we’ve got to be careful with these top players and being desperate as the media, as a fanbase, saying we want this manager in there. I think it’d be far too early for Kompany.”

Chelsea have also been linked to Kompany, who has refused to comment on the speculation around his future ahead of Burnley’s return to the Premier League.
