Tottenham make embarrassing Richarlison gaffe after Brazil knocked out of World Cup

Tottenham embarrassingly congratulated Richarlison on reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, at the very same time Brazil were sent crashing out.

The Selecao took on Croatia in the quarter-finals and looked to be heading for the semis after Neymar scored an extra-time wondergoal. But Croatia left them stunned with three minutes to play when Bruno Petkovic saw his deflected shot fly past Alisson.

That sent the game to a penalty shootout, with Rodrygo missing Brazil's first spot-kick before Marquinhos hit the post with their fourth. With Croatia scoring all of their penalties, those misses ensured Brazil were sent home at the quarter-final stage for the second successive World Cup.

Despite the favourites being dumped out, Tottenham 's official Facebook page instead congratulated them on going through to the final four. Richarlison is the only Tottenham player in the Brazil squad.

And as Croatia raced to goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic to celebrate their win, Spurs posted a photo of Richarlison in Brazil kit. Their caption for that photo read: "Richarlison is into the World Cup semi-finals!"

Tottenham quickly deleted the tweet before posting another picture of Richarlison and commiserating with him in their caption. It read: "Richarlison and Brazil exit the World Cup, head up Richy."

Spurs then posted a photo of winger Ivan Perisic celebrating and congratulated him and Croatia on reaching the semi-finals. That caption read: "Well played, Ivan! Croatia head into the semi-final stages!"

Former Manchester City star Micah Richards admitted Brazil would have been left heart-broken by the manner of their defeat. But he praised former Spurs star Luka Modric for his performance as Croatia's captain.

"It’s heartbreak, you see Marquinhos there, I thought he was a shoo-in to score, with his experience, the player he is, the way he’s played in this tournament, the courage but it wasn’t meant to be," Richards told BBC Sport.

"I feel for Neymar, it wasn’t his best game today but he got his goal, it wasn’t enough. We said mental toughness before the game and the Croatian players attitude never to give in.

"Modric, we thought it would be his last World Cup. Some of the passes he made, controlling the tempo. He dictated at his pace, Brazil didn't know what to do.

"Neymar scores that goal and you think it’s all over but they fought to the end, got the goal and were absolutely brilliant. That togetherness got them through in the end."

Tottenham later sent commiserations to Richarlison (Facebook/Tottenham)

Former Spurs star Jurgen Klinsmann criticised superstar attacker Neymar for not stepping up to take Brazil's first penalty. And he insisted their early miss led to nerves creeping into their later takers.

"Yeah a totally different approach from managers and you always had your best players taking the first, set the tone, don’t keep them for the fifth because they might not get the chance," Klinsmann told BBC Sport.

"For me, Neymar would always be number one, set the tone, score the first one. The mentality shifted with Croatia’s equaliser.

"If you’re a Brazilian player then you get scared and you know the whole nation is expecting you to go through then you start to panic a little bit in your mind. Then you’re far more nervous, balance yourself out."
