Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an early offer to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona this summer.
Spurs have already wasted away their three opportunities to win some silverware this season and will once again go another campaign without a trophy. But that has prompted the club to already begin planning ahead for next season, with it looking like real attempts to win some silverware are set to be made.
And former Manchester United winger Depay is at the top of the list, with director of football Fabio Paratici making advances to lure the Dutch international to north London in the next transfer window. According to Barcelona-based transfer insider Gerard Romero, who made the claims on Twitch on Monday evening, Spurs have already made an offer to Depay as they look to bolster their ranks for next season.
Do Tottenham have a realistic chance of signing Memphis Depay from Barcelona this summer? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
As quoted by Barca Universal, an offer has already been put in place as Spurs look to gain the upper hand on other admirers by getting in early. Depay only joined the Catalans in the summer, signing a two-year deal after arriving on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract at Lyon. He became the main focal point of Barca’s attack following the departure of Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, and has racked up 10 goals in Spain this season.
But following the La Liga outfit’s early season struggles, Depay became heavily relied on for scoring the goals for his side and it soon took its effect. Since the arrivals of Premier League trio Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traore in January, things have much improved. However, that has seen Depay fall down the pecking order in Xavi’s team and although he is reportedly determined to fight for his place at the Nou Camp, he may be tempted by a move away.
And Barca could also be tempted to cash in on a player they paid nothing for, with any financial gain hard to ignore given their recent problems in that department. It is certainly an ambitious move from Spurs but by doing so, it could be crucial in keeping Antonio Conte on board for next season, as well as Harry Kane.
And the Dutchman has previous Premier League experience with Man United, despite his career at Old Trafford not quite going to plan, but nonetheless, he may not need as much time to adapt. Spurs must now hope that they are able to convince the 28-year-old to move back to England for a second chance in the Premier League.
