The Premier League has had another dramatic transfer window, but rather than consign it to the past and get on with the season at hand, we’re addressing one burning question: In 30 years of Premier League football, who is the greatest transfer of all time?
These kinds of conversations are passionate, often unresolvable and unabashedly wade into deep levels of nostalgia... meaning the only acceptable option here is Teddy Sheringham.
Winning the Premier League’s first ever Golden Boot with 21 goals after his transfer from Nottingham Forest to Tottenham Hotspur for £2.8million in 1992, Sheringham is the man who made the deep-lying forward role cool before it was cool. He would score 20 or more goals in a season twice more for Spurs, rounding out to 124 goals in 277 total appearances - one of those being an absolute screamer in the match that put an emphatic end to an 11-year-and-347-day run of failing to defeat Chelsea.

The shouts of “Judas” that soiled the air as Sheringham returned to (and scored twice against) his former club in Manchester United colours threatened to sour his legend (albeit he did miss a penalty on his return to White Hart Lane). But all was forgiven when he re-signed for Spurs in 2001, captaining the club and managing 13 goals in both of his final two seasons to earn himself a place in the Tottenham Hotspur Hall of Fame in 2008.
So, where does Sheringham rank among the greatest top-flight deals? Have your say in our Best Premier League Transfers Ever poll below.
