Tottenham join Man City and Liverpool in the race to hijack Chelsea plan for 'next John Terry'

Tottenham appear to have joined the race to sign Levi Colwill this summer as the queue for the Chelsea youngster continues to grow. The 20-year-old defender has been heavily linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge in the summer having impressed while on loan at Brighton this season.

Colwill, who sees his contract with the Blues expire in 2025, has featured 15 times for the Seagulls this term, helping Roberto De Zerbi's side keep five clean sheets. His impressive performances on the south coast have given Brighton hope of securing a Champions League qualification place, thus courting the interest of some top clubs.

football.london understands that the west Londoners have been very impressed with the Cobham graduate's progress recently and it's said that his future will be assessed once he returns to the club in the summer.

While Chelsea are yet to make a decision, some of the Premier League's wealthiest clubs have reportedly formed a queue for the England youth international's signature. According to The Sun, Tottenham are 'admirers' of Colwill but the north Londoners face competition from Manchester City and Liverpool.

Colwill is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders in the world, with his profile being one that is considerably rare – he's left-footed. As quoted by SussexLive earlier this month, De Zerbi explained exactly why the Chelsea star is important to Brighton.

"[Adam] Webster I think in the Bournemouth game was one of the best players on the pitch with personality," the Italian said. "I know the quality of Adam but I know the quality of Levi Colwill. Levi is a left-footer and it is an important quality for us because with Levi we can find different line passes, different solutions in the build-up, in the last 40 metres."

After wearing the number 26 while on loan at Huddersfield last season, Colwill has been compared to club legend and former captain John Terry. Addressing the comparisons, the youngster said: "I'll take it. I'm not going to complain. It's not a bad thing to be called the new John Terry.

"I haven't made the comparison myself, so the fans and media can make whatever comparisons they want to make, it isn't going to affect me. John Terry is a club legend and leader, someone every centre-back at Chelsea should look up to.

"A great guy and player. I've not had the chance to speak to him too much. When he was around the academy building, we'd have the odd little chat, but it'd be more of a, 'Hi, how are you?' kind of thing, not on a personal level about football or things like that."
