Tottenham join Arsenal and Chelsea in transfer race for World Cup star amid Antonio Conte wish

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined Chelsea and Arsenal in the transfer race for World Cup winner and Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Spurs enter the transfer window in the Premier League top four after their Boxing Day draw with Brentford. However, there remain question marks over the future of head coach Antonio Conte as the Italian approaches the end of his current contract in north London.

Conte's squad is in desperate need of reinforcements throughout and with the goal to reach Champions League football again, Spurs may have to splash the cash in January to ensure they are not overtaken by Manchester United or Chelsea.

One player linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is Brighton's World Cup star Mac Allister. The 24-year-old started all but one of Argentina's seven games in Qatar as Lionel Scaloni's men lifted the nation's third title in Qatar.

Mac Allister, who joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in 2019, has become one of the Premier League's hottest prospects after his form for the Seagulls. This season, Mac Allister has scored five goals in 14 Premier League games from midfield, warranting interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

According to CBS Sports' Ben Jacobs, Spurs have been watching the midfielder since before the World Cup and are set to compete with Chelsea and Arsenal for his services. He told Chris Cowlin's YouTube channel: "Tottenham like the player, they actually scouted him back in January.

"So it's a bit more long-standing than people realise, but he's contracted until 2025. Brighton also have an option to extend for a year."

Tottenham do face stiff competition for the midfielder, who is valued at up to €40million (£35million) by CIES Football Observatory. According to Argentine outlet TyC, Chelsea, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are also interested. The report insists that Graham Potter's men are currently leading the race for his signature, with the Gunners closely behind.

football.london understands that Spurs are ideally looking to bring in at least two new players in the January transfer window as Conte looks to bolster his defence and attacking creativity.
