Tottenham injury update: Rodrigo Bentancur, Tanguy Ndombele and Bryan Gil latest news and return dates

Tottenham enter the new season with a number of first-team players suffering from injuries.

Long-term issues continue to persist for Rodrigo Bentancur and Bryan Gil, the latter having undergone an operation during the summer on a troubling issue.

There have also been problems for Ryan Sessegnon, Fraser Forster and Tanguy Ndombele although Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has revealed the French midfielder is now struggling with his fitness having overcome an injury. Young players Troy Parrott and Alfie Whiteman are unavailable as the big kick-off looms for the 2023-24 Premier League campaign.

There were also fears Sergio Reguilon picked up a knock late in the pre-season defeat to Barcelona, which have not yet been confirmed. Yves Bissouma returned from his minor issue to start the game in Spain.

Here is your latest update of Tottenham injuries and return dates...

Rodrigo Bentancur

Spurs midfielder Bentancur set out a timeframe of “two to three months” on his serious knee injury earlier in the summer, which could mean a return by the end of August at the very earliest.

The Uruguayan ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a game with Leicester in February and required an operation.

“It’s a long injury, one of the most difficult in football, but the truth is that I’m having such a good time with my family,” said Bentancur in June. “I train the same every day, I do double shifts two or three times a week.

“I brought the club’s physiotherapist to Uruguay. We continue working and my knee is doing very well. I didn’t set a lap time, but I hope in two or three months to be at least gaining a few minutes again.”

Tanguy Ndombele

Postecoglou poured doubt over the future of Ndombele after leaving the midfielder out of Spurs’ defeat to Barcelona.

Following an injury earlier in the summer, the Frenchman is not yet “physically” where he needs to be to play under the Australian coach.

“They're a little bit physically behind the rest,” he is quoted by football.london as saying about Ndombele and Leeds-bound defender Joe Rodon. “The way we play there's a bit that I need to be strong on and that is that you've got to be at a certain physical level to play this kind of football.

“If you're not it does no justice to the player themselves, but there's no doubt that we've got a big squad at the moment and there will be outgoings and those decisions are going to be made by the club and the players themselves. Tonight was about getting minutes into the lads that I felt we needed to be ready come Sunday.”

Bryan Gil

Spanish winger Gil underwent surgery on a groin injury last week. No timeframe was delivered by Tottenham over his return but reports suggest he will miss the first two months of the season.

A statement read: “Bryan, who spent the second part of last season on loan at Sevilla, will be closely monitored by our medical team to determine when he can return to training.”

Ryan Sessegnon

A hamstring injury suffered in pre-season has ruled Sessegnon out of the start of the campaign. The persistent problem has denied the left-back a potential summer mover away from Spurs, with his return expected after the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

“Devastated and not really sure what to say right now,” he posted on social media after the operation. “Hopefully this provides a light at the end of the tunnel. I feel very hungry and motivated to return stronger than ever and be back to doing what I do best for you guys.”

Fraser Forster

Reserve goalkeeper Forster has been unable to play throughout Tottenham’s pre-season due to a back injury. No timeframe has been placed on his return.

Postecoglou said in July: “Fraser Forster has got a bit of a back injury, which probably means he won't travel [on the Asia tour] because he won't be able to participate.”
