Tottenham injury update: Cristian Romero, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ryan Sessegnon latest news and return dates

Tottenham are sweating over a head injury suffered by Cristian Romero in the draw with Brentford on Sunday.

The Argentine defender went down shortly before scoring the opening goal in west London, which again saw him suffer from the after-effects of his earlier clash of heads.

Ange Postecoglou took the decision to substitute Romero despite the player appearing to stress that he was fine to carry on.

Should he miss the next game, he’ll join a Spurs injury list featuring Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and more.

Here is your latest update of Tottenham injuries and return dates...

Cristian Romero

Spurs boss Postecoglou has confirmed that the club filed the wrong paperwork for Romero to be taken off as a concussion substitute against Brentford, meaning they missed out on what is meant to be a free change in such circumstances.

“We’re in an era where we know about these things so I’m not a doctor and anytime that happens I think it’s really important that we protect the players,” said the Australian. “They don’t know themselves what’s going on and I had medical advice.”

Postecoglou rued the “madness” of the documentation error and now Spurs medical staff will asssess Romero to determine if he suffered a concussion.

That would rule him out of next weekend’s game against Manchester United due to the return-to-play concussion protocol.

Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham midfielder Bentancur set out a timeframe of “two to three months” on his serious knee injury earlier in the summer, which could mean early next month at the very earliest.

The Uruguayan ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a game with Leicester in February and required an operation.

“It’s a long injury, one of the most difficult in football, but the truth is that I’m having such a good time with my family,” said Bentancur in June. “I train the same every day, I do double shifts two or three times a week.

“I brought the club’s physiotherapist to Uruguay. We continue working and my knee is doing very well. I didn’t set a lap time, but I hope in two or three months to be at least gaining a few minutes again.”

Ryan Sessegnon

A hamstring injury suffered in pre-season has ruled Sessegnon out of the start of the campaign. The persistent problem has denied the left-back a potential summer mover away from Spurs, with his return expected after the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

“Devastated and not really sure what to say right now,” he posted on social media after the operation. “Hopefully this provides a light at the end of the tunnel. I feel very hungry and motivated to return stronger than ever and be back to doing what I do best for you guys.”

Bryan Gil

Spanish winger Gil underwent surgery on a groin injury last week. No timeframe was delivered by Tottenham over his return but reports suggest he will miss the first two months of the season.

A statement read: “Bryan, who spent the second part of last season on loan at Sevilla, will be closely monitored by our medical team to determine when he can return to training.”

Fraser Forster

Reserve goalkeeper Forster was not on the bench at Brentford having missed pre-season due to a back injury. No timeframe has been placed on his return.

Postecoglou said in July: “Fraser Forster has got a bit of a back injury, which probably means he won’t travel [on the Asia tour] because he won’t be able to participate.”
