Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

18:22

A single goal is enough to settle the tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Maddison’s lone strike after just 13 minutes enough to see Spurs beat Manchester United for the third time this season in all competitions. Amorim’s side did have their chances to equalise, with most of them falling to the foot of Garnacho, but the Argentina international was not clinical enough, failing to score despite three shots on target and four total hits - including a first-half effort that was blazed over the target from 10 yards away. A lack of senior options on the bench prevented Manchester United from changing things up after the restart, with the same XI seeing out the entire match, with tired legs adding to a relative lack of creativity as the game wore on. The one-goal advantage didn’t prevent Tottenham from coming forward at every opportunity in search of some insurance but it ultimately wasn’t required, with the win coming after an xG total of 2.15 - compared to Manchester United’s 1.54; relatively high totals for a match that saw one strike. Tottenham climb into 12th and will look to make it three on-the-bounce on Saturday against Ipswich Town, while Manchester United drop to 15th and meet Everton on the same day. That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Tottenham and Manchester United - we hope you’ve enjoyed it!

Fernandes’ outswinging corner from the right looks to drop for De Ligt but the crowd of bodies prevents the centre-back from getting a shot away, before Casemiro swivels to hit a half-volley that fails to reach Vicario thanks to Spence’s block.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

18:13

Despite firing 13 shots in the match, Manchester United have not been able to put Vicario under periods of sustained pressure, with the goalkeeper only called into action five times; thrice in the second half. They’re running out of time to pull back level, which would see them maintain their lead over Spurs in the table - with the current result dropping Amorim’s side into 15th.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

18:11

Since Amorim took charge in November, only five sides have picked up fewer points in the Premier League than Manchester United (14). Amorim is only the fourth manager to lose seven or more of his first 13 top-flight games in charge of the Red Devils, along with A.H Albut (seven), John Chapman (10), and Jimmy Murphy (seven).

Tel hits a low, tame shot at the first time of asking that’s easily smothered by Onana, after Son’s layoff in a central position 20 yards from goal.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

18:04

Fernandes hooks his inswinging corner towards the near post in search of a team-mate but several players fall to the deck after a collision in front of goal, allowing Vicario to punch the ball away under no pressure.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

18:00

Dalot gets forward down the flank before laying the ball off to Mazraoui, whose first-time cross finds the head of a leaping Zirkzee, but the forward can’t quite crane his neck enough to put his effort on target from six yards away.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:59

Danso does well to slide in cleanly just ahead of his own 18-yard box, beating Hojlund in the battle for Zirkzee’s first-time pass to put it back to the feet of Vicario.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:59

Son’s cheeky attempt to score directly from an inswinging corner-kick doesn’t quite come off, with the ball sailing just above the crossbar before landing on the top of the net for a goal-kick.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:56

Spence cuts inside from the left, dribbling around both Dalot and Zirkzee before hitting a hopeful effort towards goal that bounces up comfortably for Onana.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:55

Son’s low, whipped free-kick delivery towards the near is flicked on with skill by the backheel of Kulusevski, who puts the ball off an unwitting Dalot and behind for a corner.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:54

Kulusevski’s inswinging corner is flicked on by Kulusevski near the six-yard box, putting Dalot and Johnson in a race to prevent the throw on the far side. The wing-back is a bit over eager and gives his opponent a kick, which results in a free-kick on the left touchline.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:50

Despite the favourable position they are in, Tottenham are winless in their last three Premier League matches at home when leading at the half, losing 4-3 to Chelsea and 2-1 to Leicester City despite one-goal advantages at the break, while taking a point against Wolves.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:49

Fernandes switches play out to the left for an unmarked Dorgu, who is forced to step inside to get on the end of the pass, taking him closer to the retreating Kulusevski. In an attempt to prevent the defence from settling, the wing-back looks to thread the ball through the lines early for Hojlund, but a touch off the chest from Porro takes it back to Vicario.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:47

Dalot pulls back a pass to Fernandes, whose first-time cross is headed away on the six-yard box by Danso, ahead of Zirkzee. The clearance drops to Garnacho, who is just inside the penalty area on the left, but his low strike to the near post is blocked by the outstretched arm of Vicario!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:45

Garnacho has a strike from a similar position to Dalot moments earlier - 10 yards from goal on the right - after Zirkzee manages to thread a pass through for the winger, but again the Italy international goalkeeper is able to preserve his clean sheet with a textbook two-handed parry. The ball comes back out to the winger, who is able to side-foot a pass back towards the penalty spot, but it’s pounced upon by Danso.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:44

Dalot forces a great, point-blank save out of Vicario after the wing-back was first to Maguire’s long pass from deep, but the offside flag denies the visitors any chance at a rebound.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:42

Spence holds off Mazraoui with strength on the left wing before spinning past the defender with guile to charge into the penalty area. Ahead of the byline, the full-back pulls a pass back towards the edge of the six-yard box for Tel - taking a touch off Kulusevski on its way through - with the striker sending his first-time effort off target.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:39

Son takes a couple steps inside from the left after linking up with Spence and curls a cross towards the far post but the forward gets it all wrong - sending the ball directly behind for a goal-kick.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:38

Porro’s outswinging corner is initially cleared by Maguire but not definitively, with Tottenham able to regain possession before playing the ball out to the right for Porro to deliver a second effort. This time it drops to Tel in a crowd of bodies on the edge of the penalty area, with the striker able to dispatch a shot while slipping, but it’s easily saved by Onana.

Manchester United get the match restarted from the kick-off!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:22

A number of injuries has left Amorim’s bench extremely thin, with Lindelof the only experienced, veteran option from the bench. 17-year old Obi-Martin looks an extremely promising prospect after 12 goals in 19 games for the Denmark U17 side and could be in line to replace either Zirkzee or Hojlund - with the pair combining for just 26 touches. A win could be all-important for Tottenham but knowing Postecoglou, he will look to see out the result by continuing to attack and score goals to lessen the pressure on the defence, which could lead to the introductions of Odobert or Johnson. Udogie could also be an option at full-back on the left, should fresh legs be required.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:18

Tottenham survive an early pair of chances and make the most of it, taking a 1-0 lead over Manchester United into the interval at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, thanks to Maddison’s goal just before the quarter-hour mark. Despite starting the match second-best, the visitors were the first to threaten, with Hojlund and Garnacho both able to test Vicario inside the first-11 minutes, before Davies’ goal-line clearance prevented an early deficit. It would only take 120 seconds from that moment for Spurs to pull ahead, thanks to Maddison who was able to tap home a rebound following Onana’s save on Bergvall. Garnacho really should have brought his side level with a shot from space inside the penalty area, but he failed to hit the net - blazing his effort well over the crossbar. Trailing in both possession with only 33 per cent and in expected goals with only 0.47 (compared to Spurs’ 0.95), Amorim’s team will need to flip the script in the second half to avoid a third defeat in four Premier League games.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:12

Fernandes scoops his set-piece delivery into the six-yard box with De Ligt looking to attack it, but the centre-back makes a little too much contact with Vicario for referee Peter Bankes’ liking as he blows his whistle for a free-kick.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:10

In an attempt to put pressure on Casemiro receiving a pass, Davies steps through the midfielder and takes him down, giving Manchester United a free-kick 30 yards from goal in the left channel.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:09

Tottenham have already beaten Manchester United twice in all competitions this season, 3-0 in the Premier League and 4-3 in the League Cup quarter-final. Not since 1989/90 have Spurs beaten Manchester United three times in a single campaign, while the last side overall to defeat the Red Devils thrice in a season were Chelsea in 2012/13.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:08

Fernandes opts to go long from a free-kick inside the centre-circle after Maddison’s mistimed sliding tackle catches the ankle of Mazraoui, but the captain’s delivery doesn’t give Maguire much of a chance to keep the ball in play ahead of the byline, with the centre-back connecting with a hopeful volley that puts it behind for a goal-kick.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:06

Porro’s outswinging corner from the right looks to drop for Bentancur before Maguire’s intervention, but Bergvall’s push in the back of Casemiro gives Manchester United a chance to clear their lines definitively from a free-kick.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:03

Of players to have at least 10 big chances in the Premier League this season, Garnacho has the worst big chance conversion rate with only two goals on 14 such opportunities (14.3 per cent).

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

17:00

Tottenham are more than doubling Manchester United’s expected goals total as we approach the half-hour mark, with Postecoglou’s team producing 0.95 on five shots compared to the visitors’ 0.4 on seven hits. Though they have not been at their best, Amorim can feel his side should be level, with Garnacho and Hojlund stopped by fingertips.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:58

ONANA MAKES THE STOP! Maddison’s skipping pass finds its way through the heart of Manchester United’s defence and into the path of Son, who takes the ball towards the byline before pulling a pass back to Tel, whose swept first-time effort is punched away by two fists from a diving Onana!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:57

Fernandes winds up and hits a shot from over 25 yards out but he doesn’t get a chance to see whether it would have gone on target, with Bentancur in the perfect position to put in a block. The ricochet takes the ball back to Tel, who looks to drag Tottenham forward but he’s promptly taken down by Casemiro, who gives away a free-kick just inside the hosts’ half.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:56

HOW HAS GARNACHO MISSED?! Fernandes dribbles towards the edge of the 18-yard box before playing a disguised pass out to the right for Garnacho, who is left completely unmarked after Porro’s failed attempt at a sliding interception. With time and space and only the goalkeeper to beat, the winger leans back and blazes his right-footed effort well over the crossbar from 10 yards away!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:54

Zirzkee receives Dorgu’s pass and turns with intent, working an inch of space ahead of Bergvall before hitting a shot from 20 yards out that narrowly misses the far post.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:52

Manchester United have now conceded the first goal of the game in four of their last five matches in the Premier League - with the only exception a 1-0 win over Fulham at the end of January. Amorim’s team have only won three games this season from this position in 14 attempts; once away from home.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:50

Tel somehow manages to bring Spence’s cross down inside the penalty area between three Manchester United defenders before laying the ball off to Kulusevski, but the Sweden international is unable to get his left-footed strike through the crowd of bodies, with a sprawling Maguire putting in an important block.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:49

Casemiro’s lovely switch of play out to the right picks out Dalot, but he’s immediately swarmed by both Son and Spence, who combine to close down the angle and prevent an early cross, which eventually leads to a turnover in possession.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:47

After almost conceding on two or three separate occasions in quick succession, Tottenham manage to survive unscathed before showing their clinical side in the opposition’s penalty area, scoring with their second shot on target - with the first putting Maddison in position. It’s Spurs’ 26th first-half goal in 25 matches this season - with only Manchester City and Liverpool finding the back of the net more often.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:43

EVEN BETTER SAVE AND OFF THE LINE! Tottenham fail to clear their penalty area following Hojlund’s shot, with Garnacho able to recollect possession before curling a strike from 18 yards out that’s parried by the fingertips of a diving Vicario. Dalot is there to follow up the chance with a close-range volley but Davies somehow scrambles across and scuffs the ball away!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:42

GOOD SAVE! Maguire picks out Hojlund inside the penalty area with a long, raking pass, and the forward is able to make it stick, shifting the ball onto his left foot to get past Davies before firing a powerful effort that’s parried away by Vicario in his first action since November!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:40

Davies goes long from inside his own half looking for the arced run of Son but the centre-back puts a little bit too much on his pass - taking it into the arms of the awaiting Onana.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:38

Son hooks a left-footed cross into the penalty area after Maddison’s deflected pass forward still finds a way to reach the Tottenham captain, but Kulusevski is a half-step behind the delivery and is unable to turn the ball goalward.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:36

Maddison receives Spence’s pass in midfield and looks to roll Mazraoui, who grabs hold of the midfielder before dragging him to the ground - giving Tottenham an early free-kick which is taken short quickly by Son, who is eager to keep play moving.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:35

Tottenham are getting an early feel for the game, knocking the ball around from left to right and back again to find the spaces in Manchester United’s defence. The visitors will have no problems sitting back before hitting on the counter, with Fernandes pulling the strings from a deeper position alongside Casemiro.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

Manchester United also make five changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace 14 days ago, with as many as four players missing through injury. De Ligt is selected in defence to replace Lisandro Martinez, who will not feature again this season, while Casemiro is given a chance in midfield due to Manuel Ugarte’s unavailability. Dorgu is handed a Premier League debut at right-wing back for Amad Diallo, whose ankle injury will keep him out until May. Leny Yoro is not up for selection and gives his place to Zirkzee, with Mazraoui dropping into the back line and Kobbie Mainoo’s thigh knock means Hojlund leads the line in attack.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:21

Tottenham make five alterations from the XI that beat Brentford 2-0 in the league on February 2. Vicario has returned to fitness after fracturing his ankle on November 23, taking Kinsky’s place between the posts, while Danso is handed his Premier League debut instead of Gray in defence. Bergvall takes over from Bissouma in midfield and Maddison is given the nod over Moore in the attack. The final swap is also at the top-end of the pitch, with Tel leads the line for the first time in the Premier League after his goal last weekend in the FA Cup, with Richarlison unavailable through injury.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:05

Manchester United have alternated wins and losses in their last four games, but were most recently blanked by Crystal Palace 2-0 14 days ago, which leaves them in 14th position thanks to Everton’s win yesterday. A recent struggle to find goals has seen Ruben Amorim’s team hit the back of the net just twice in their last three fixtures; an issue that is compounded by the recent news that Amad Diallo will miss a lengthy spell through injury. The visitors haven’t managed to beat Tottenham in the league since a 2-0 on October 19, 2022, a run of four-consecutive games - though an end to that barren streak could potentially be enough to see them jump two places into 12th.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

16:00

15th-placed Tottenham welcome Manchester United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in a match between two of the most injury plagued sides in the Premier League. One spot and two points behind today’s opponents, Ange Postecoglou’s team are looking to make it back-to-back league wins for the first time since September after beating Brentford two weeks ago to arrest a run of seven-straight games without collecting three points; the last time they achieved this feat they did so thanks to a 3-0 win over Manchester United.
