Tottenham Hotspur have a Harry Kane tactical shift they could revisit vs Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur interim boss Ryan Mason has flirted with the idea of playing Harry Kane in a deeper role against Liverpool this weekend.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, the England captain starred as Spurs fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Manchester United on Thursday.

Kane set up Son Heung-min for the equaliser with a cross from out wide to keep Tottenham's Champions League dream alive.

A rigid style of play under Antonio Conte was widely condemned by the Spurs faithful. But Mason tinkered with the system in an attempt to get his team firing, which saw Kane, who now has 46 assists in the Premier League, playing deeper than ever.

And Mason is considering a similar strategy against Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield.

“We do like to give Harry guidance on where we feel space might be but, at the same time, we're talking about one of the most intelligent and best players in the world,” Mason said of England's all-time top goalscorer. “To take that instinctiveness away from him is something we don't want to do.

“If Harry feels like he needs to come deep and take the ball from the defenders at times, then he can do that because he has the passing ability to affect games from every area of the pitch. I think we saw that, once again, Harry Kane is probably one of the best strikers in the world.

“We have different tactical plans for every opposition and we understood yesterday that we probably had one of the best strikers in the world coming up against one of the best defensive midfielders in the last decade, so that was going to be a key battle.

“I thought Harry influenced the game. He created the second goal but at the same time he was constantly involved and, the more touches Harry gets, the more chances we will create.”
