Tottenham hold major James Maddison transfer advantage amid Newcastle's £45m Anthony Gordon deal

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United transfer target James Maddison could still leave Leicester before the end of the January transfer window. The Foxes have rejected every proposal for Maddison thus far with the club making their stance very clear that only a huge offer would tempt them into selling in the coming days.

The attacking midfielder's form for Leicester in the first part of the season saw him called up to England's World Cup squad but an injury prevented him from featuring prominently. That same issue plagued his return to Leicester with the 26-year-old missing the first four games following the resumption of the Premier League season.

Brendan Rodgers was able to welcome Maddison back into the fold for the clash with Brighton last Saturday, handing him a 20-minute cameo in the 2-2 draw. His return from injury, coupled with the January window entering its final stages, has seen talk of a departure resurface and both Newcastle and Tottenham are likely to be on high alert after Leicester's latest move in January.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Leicester City are in advanced talks to sign Brazilian winger Tete from Olympique Lyon. Discussions are now said to be at the final stages.

The Magpies have been the most interested club in acquiring Maddison but their move to sign Everton star Anthony Gordon in a deal worth £45million could impact any further deals. The takeover completed at St James' Park has seen significant funds available to the club and therefore Eddie Howe could certainly sign both players this window in order to strengthen their push for a top four spot.

However, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle would be able to sign both as a result of their need to spend carefully in order to stay within Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits.

With the deal for Pedro Porro potentially being completed this weekend, Tottenham could turn their attention to a deal for Maddison and may have a straight run at the English midfielder given Newcastle's decision to agree a deal with Everton for Gordon.

Rodgers has previously hinted at major departures occurring from the King Power Stadium in the coming windows as Leicester struggle to financially compete with English football's heavyweights.

He told reporters: "It’s getting more difficult. The financial resources, not just in the top six, makes it really difficult. Clubs have multiple injections of finances. We have one owner and one family. Each year it gets tougher. It doesn’t soften our ambition to be super competitive.”

A huge offer would have to be sent to Leicester for the departure of Maddison to be sanctioned, however Tottenham have a history of sealing cut-price deals for the main transfer targets. Loans with buy options for Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski helped in negotiations and a similar scenario could be struck by Spurs in the window's final stages for Maddison.
