Tottenham first half player ratings vs Roma: Doherty, Dier and attack struggle but Sanchez decent

Hugo Lloris

Pulled off an early save during a scramble in the Spurs box in the opening minute. Couldn't do much about Ibanez's powerful header. 7

Cristian Romero

Pushed Zaniolo over in the box within the first five minutes but the referee wasn't having it. Struggled with Doherty to stop Roma's breaks down the right. 5

Eric Dier

Played an excellent diagonal ball into the path of Kulusevski to set up an early attack but he looked shaky as well at the back at times in the first half. Needed to be stronger in marking the corner Roma scored from. 4

Davinson Sanchez

Made a great sliding block to stop Abraham's shot only for Roma to score from the subsequent corner. Had to get forward a lot down the left which isn't his strength but he was probably the best Spurs defender in the opening 45 minutes. 7

Matt Doherty

Missed an interception before the early scramble and early on looked like a player who hasn't had any time on the right during pre-season. Had a header pushed on to the post from Bissouma's pass but the flag went up for offside. Looked better going forward than he did in defence. 4

Yves Bissouma

A couple of touches and balls into the box from the midfield but he also looked slightly off the pace at times, perhaps understandable after his recent Covid-enforced absence. 6

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Curled a dangerous ball into Kane and Doherty 19 minutes in which neither could get on target. Struggled to impose himself on the midfield until the half wore on. 6

Ivan Perisic

Some bright moments getting forward, including two shots from distance, one sailing just wide of the right-hand post. Got plenty of runs down the left as the half wore on but was equally culpable with Dier of giving Ibanez a free run to score from the corner. 6

Dejan Kulusevski

Took down a long Dier ball and tried to get a low ball into Son in the centre of the box. Bright in moments with some quick passing but needed bit more quality. 5

Harry Kane

Kept dropping back to spin the ball into the path of others and he put the ball into the net only to be flagged offside. Took a tough tackle off England team-mates Abraham as well. 5

Son Heung-min

Plenty of willing running but, like his attacking colleagues, little in the way of quality in the final third. 5
