Tottenham dealt major Pedro Porro transfer blow as Chelsea continue aggressive January spending

Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their bid to find a new right wingback this window. Their struggles in the position were once more made evident in the North London Derby as Matt Doherty was replaced having struggled to make any inroads on his side.

Although Arsenal's main play came on the left for Tottenham, where Ryan Sessegnon was plunged into action against Bukayo Saka, it has been the right side that has been the subject of issue for Antonio Conte this season. Having signed youngster Djed Spence over the summer he has hardly featured.

That has left Doherty and Emerson Royal to battle it out whilst Ivan Perisic, 33, has filled in when needed too. Lucas Moura was also used there in a makeshift role before the World Cup. Wingbacks have formed the pillars for every successful Conte side and that's where their efforts are focused this window.

Football.london that the club are keen on signing someone to add immediate quality to the squad in that position with Sporting Lisbon's Pedro Porro the most likely candidate. The 23-year-old only joined the Portuguese side this summer permanently having been on the books at Manchester City since 2019.

He has spent time Real Valladolid in the meantime but moved for just £7.5m seven months ago. That price now looks cheap compared to the £35m being attached to him in January. With Chelsea also interested in snapping him up there is competition for his signature.

However, having struggled with a knock earlier this season, keeping him out for several weeks into the campaign, Porro has suffered another injury according to Portuguese publication Record. With the desire for any incoming at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to become a first-team player straight away and be ready for immediate use, this throws a spanner in the works.

Porro already has 10 assists this season in all competitions as well as two goals in 23 games, an extremely healthy attacking output for a wingback, even in a weaker league.

Spurs will be hoping that his knock isn't too bad and that things can progress well in the coming weeks to secure a key target for the rest of the season.
