Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario could be ruled out of Italy's Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia on Friday night.
The Spurs stopper, who has been in fine form since moving to the club from Empoli this summer, was an option to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma.
While Donnarumma is far more established at international level and played a crucial role in the Azzurri winning the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, he has come under increasing criticism following his move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.
The Italian FA, however, have now confirmed Vicario was suffering from "flu symptoms" and that Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi has been called up as cover.
Spurs are already dealing with an injury crisis. Destiny Udogie was another to have pulled out of the Italy squad due to a muscle injury, while neither of Micky van de Ven or James Maddison are expected to play again before the New Year.
Richarlison, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon are all recovering from surgery and Ivan Perisic is unlikely to feature at all this season.
