Tottenham 'considering historic bid' to host 2026 Super Bowl at their £1bn stadium

The Super Bowl is an American treasure that has never been held outside the United States, but Tottenham Hotspur reportedly hope to change that in their 'most ambitious project' to date.

That's if Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is successful in its unprecedented bid to host the NFL 's crown jewel in 2026, which would make it the first fixture of its kind to take place overseas.

Venues have already been decided for the next four Super Bowls (up to 2025), but the Daily Mail reported Spurs are eager to convince NFL chiefs to export their biggest match of the year.

Super Bowl LVI will be contested between the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, this Sunday, with the spectacle forecast to generate around £300million.

Those projections have been disputed in the past, however, with Super Bowl host cities also required to meet a long list of demands, as would be required of Tottenham if they were hosting an event like the World Cup.

Holding the Super Bowl on English shores could present major logistical complications, however, due to the time difference between the United Kingdom and those across the pond.

Around 100 million people tend to tune in for the Super Bowl—it peaked at 114.4 million in 2015—in the United States alone, representing the large majority of its viewers.

Tottenham could encounter resistance from Haringey Council because the Super Bowl—which is famed for its raucous half-time show—would have to kick off in the early hours of the morning to suit the U.S. audience.

The Daily Mail indicated Stadium Australia could be among Spurs' biggest competition if a Super Bowl bidding war erupted, with the time difference in Sydney making for a superior match.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is yet to find a naming-rights partner for the stadium almost three years after opening (Getty Images)

The Premier League club opened its £1billion venue in 2019 and already have a £40m agreement with the NFL to host two American football fixtures per season over the course of 10 years.

It was recently announced the Jacksonville Jaguars will return to Wembley to play one of their home games in the 2022 season, while the New Orleans Saints will 'host' one match at Tottenham's ground.

Wembley has been hosting NFL games as far back as 2007, while Tottenham first welcomed American football teams to their doors not long after opening the new ground three years ago.

It's understood the club are currently considering whether to extend or renegotiate their current agreement, having missed the chance to host two scheduled fixtures in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is yet to be satisfied in his search for an official partner to take the naming rights for the stadium, with the price said to be set at £400m over a 20-year agreement (£20m per year).

Germany is also set to begin hosting games, starting with one game at Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena this coming season, while Mexico is poised to resume hosting games after a three-year hiatus.

After the Rams play in their home stadium this Sunday, the Super Bowl will travel to Glendale, Arizona, in 2023 before moving to Nevada (2024) and finally to Louisiana (2025) in the last of its already scheduled stops.

Even an unsuccessful bid for the fixture would raise Tottenham's profile among American football audiences, but club bosses hope to blaze a trail by becoming the first non-U.S. outfit to buy a Super Bowl.
