Tottenham confirm seventh summer transfer exit as academy ace seals permanent move

Kion Etete has departed Tottenham and signed a permanent deal with Championship side Cardiff City. Completing a medical with the Bluebirds on Wednesday morning, the striker has penned a three-year deal in the Welsh capital.

Attracting the interest of a number of clubs after an impressive 2021/22 campaign, Cardiff have won the race for his signature in a deal worth £500,000 plus add-ons. With fellow strikers Troy Parrott and Dane Scarlett signing new deals recently, Etete's future at Spurs looked to have been blocked and he has opted to bring an end to his three years in north London and sign for Steve Morison's side.

Joining the Lilywhites from Notts County in the summer of 2019, the frontman was a regular in Spurs' Under-18s in his first season at the club before scoring nine goals and registering three assists in 20 appearances in 2020/21 after moving up to Premier League 2. Last term saw the player head off for his first taste of senior football, initially joining Northampton Town on loan before heading to Cheltenham Town at the turn of the year.

Firstly linking up with the Cobblers in League Two after inking a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2023, Etete marked his debut with a double in their 2-1 Carabao Cup victory at Championship side Coventry City. Hitting a further four goals in an impressive loan spell, Spurs recalled the player at the start of the year before sending him to Cheltenham in League One.

Etete once again caught the eye out on loan, contributing three goals and three assists in his 13 appearances for the Robins. Now taking the next step in his development by sealing a move to the Championship, the striker will be hoping to be involved this weekend when the Bluebirds travel to Reading.

After signing his new deal, the 20-year-old has opened up on his move. "It feels good to finally be here," he said. "The manager went into a lot of detail about the plan for the season, and how they want me to play.

"It’s my job to try and fulfil that. When the players know what the gaffer wants from them, it’s easier to put it into motion on the pitch.

"Obviously having gone from League Two to League One, the Championship is the next one. I just can’t wait to get started, get used to the level, and hopefully excel," Etete added.

“I’ll always work hard for the team and the Club. Winning is the number one priority at the end of the day, and I’ll do as much as I can to fulfil that."

This excitement is also felt by Morrison, who touched on what the former Spurs man can bring to his side. "I’m very happy. He’s an investment for the Club, and he’s got all the attributes to be a top striker," Morrison admitted.

"He’s strong, he’s quick, and he’s athletic. He will bring other players into the game, and he will run all day long. We’ve got a top player on our hands.

"He’s young, he’s hungry, and he’s a player that we see as ready now. He can get better and better, and we’ll like to see how far we can take him," he said

Etete is the seventh player to depart Tottenham this summer, joining Cameron Carter-Vickers, Steven Bergwijn and Jack Clarke in sealing permanent exits. Troy Parrott, Dane Scarlett and Joe Rodon have departed on loan to Preston North End, Portsmouth and Rennes respectively.
