Tottenham confirm James Maddison as new No10 after Harry Kane exit

New signing James Maddison will take on Harry Kane’s old No10 shirt at Tottenham, the club have confirmed.

The iconic number had been vacated by Kane’s £86.4million departure to Bayern Munich on Friday, which occurred just 48 hours before Spurs begin the Ange Postecoglou era with their Premier League opener away at London rivals Brentford.

The England captain had worn the No10 jersey at boyhood club Tottenham since the 2015/16 campaign, going on to become Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer with 278 strikes in 434 appearances and just 47 shy of Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League record of 260.

However, Tottenham must now move on and quickly plan for life without Kane, having confirmed on Saturday that Heung-min Son would be appointed as new club skipper with his strike partner gone and long-serving captain Hugo Lloris also expected to depart for a fresh challenge before the summer transfer deadline after 11 years in north London.

That was followed by confirmation of this season’s squad numbers shortly before the meeting against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday, with Spurs announcing that England playmaker Maddison would be receiving the fabled No10 vacated by Kane and also worn previously by countless other club legends including Jimmy Greaves and Glenn Hoddle, among others.

Maddison, who only joined from relegated Leicester in a £40million transfer in July, was also named on Saturday as one of two vice-captains to Son, along with defender Cristian Romero, reflecting the positive impact he has clearly already made in a short time under new boss Postecoglou.

Midfielder Yves Bissouma moves to No8 for Tottenham after the exit of Harry Winks, while new signings Manor Solomon and Ashley Phillips get 27 and 35 respectively, with 38 for Destiny Udogie and 37 for latest signing Micky van de Ven. Guglielmo Vicario will wear 13 and fellow new arrival Alejo Veliz 36.
