Tottenham have confirmed that Antonio Conte will conduct his traditional pre-match press conference on Friday as planned, amid the manager’s own suggestion that he could be sacked.
Spurs last night crashed out of the Champions League in woeful fashion, falling to a 1-0 aggregate defeat by AC Milan over two dispiriting legs, to extend their trophy drought to a 15th season. Amid the fallout, Conte again faced questions over his future, with his contract running until the end of the season, and the club able to extend by a year.
In response, Conte claimed that Tottenham could sack him following the Champions League exit, telling Amazon Prime Video: “I have a contract about to expire so let’s see how the season ends. Maybe they can send me away even earlier, perhaps the expectations were higher and maybe I disappointed.”
Conte risked further angering Spurs supporters by describing the defeat as “a little step forward” as last season the club “played in the Europa Conference League and weren’t able to get out of the group stages”. Tottenham were kicked out of the competition for failing to fulfill a fixture against Rennes amid a crippling coronavirus outbreak in the squad.
