Tottenham coach Ryan Mason in advanced talks over Anderlecht manager job

Tottenham assistant coach Ryan Mason has held talks over becoming Anderlecht manager.

The Belgian club are on the hunt for a new boss after sacking Brian Riemer last month, who had been in charge for almost two years before his departure.

It is understood that Mason remains in the running for the Anderlecht job as he targets a first permanent step into management, and is viewed as a leading candidate. Reports suggest former Watford boss Vladimir Ivic is also in the running.

Mason has had two spells as interim head coach at Tottenham, stepping in after Jose Mourinho’s departure in 2021 and then again last year after Cristian Stellini was replaced.

Mason, who came through the Spurs academy and made 70 appearances for the club during his playing career, has formed part of Ange Postecoglou’s backroom staff since the Australian’s arrival last summer.

Should Mason take charge at Anderlecht, he would follow Chris Davies in leaving his role as a coach under Postecoglou to become a manager in his own right.

Davies spent a season as senior assistant head coach at Spurs, before leaving to becoming Birmingham manager in the summer.

Speaking last season, Postecoglou gave an insight into Mason’s role on the coaching staff.

“Ryan Mason is in charge of attacking set-pieces,” the Spurs boss said. “He’s done an outstanding job all year.”

Anderlecht, who are captained by former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen, are fourth in the Belgian Pro League, five points off leaders Genk.
