Tottenham boss Ryan Mason sends Manchester United 'reaction' warning before Premier League clash

Tottenham Hotspur interim head coach Ryan Mason has promised a reaction from his players against Manchester United after Spurs were beaten 6-1 by Newcastle United last time out.

Cristian Stellini was sacked as acting head coach in the aftermath, with Mason taking charge of training this week ahead of United visiting north London on Thursday. The player-turned-coach previously oversaw the first team during the 2020/21 season when replacing Jose Mourinho on the eve of their Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

As interim, Mason managed four victories and three defeats across seven matches before the season ended and was replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo that summer.

“[We need] a reaction, absolutely a reaction,” he said, talkSPORT relays. “Sunday was disappointing for us."

“I would hope and expect a reaction from not only the players but everyone in the building and everyone involved in the club as well.”

He added: “As a professional when you have a result like we did, you expect a reaction. Honestly, I think that that takes care of itself as we were hurting, but ultimately that is a couple of days now, and our focus is on Thursday, and we believe that we can get a positive result.”

Mason, who has previously coached in the club's academy, has wasted no time in making changes around the senior team, namely calling up teenager Oliver Irow to first-team training, as The Boot Room relayed. Whether the 16-year-old features on Thursday remains to be seen, but a place on the substitutes base could be possible should Mason ring the changes.
