Tottenham boost as Ryan Mason stays after Anderlecht talks

Ryan Mason is staying at Tottenham after ending talks with Anderlecht over his first managerial role.

Anderlecht targeted Mason, who is one of Ange Postecoglou’s assistants at Spurs.

But the 33-year-old is enjoying working under Postecoglou and he and Anderlecht have mutually decided now is not the right time for him to move to the Belgian giants.

Mason staying is a boost for Spurs, who lost another of Postecoglou’s assistnts Chris Davies to Birmingham in the summer.

The former Spurs midfielder is a key part of the coaching set-up under Postecoglou alongside his other assistants Matt Wells and Mile Jedinak.

Mason started his coaching career at his boyhood club in 2018, months after he was forced to retire from playing at the age of 26 following a fracture to his skull.

He has held a variety of positions at Spurs, including two spells as interim manager.

Mason was asked to take charge of the first-team in 2021 after the departure of Jose Mourinho and led Spurs to 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final.

Antonio Conte promoted Mason to his coaching staff when he was appointed, and he had another interim spell in charge towards the end of the 2022-23 season.

Mason has been working under Postecoglou for the past 16 months and Anderlecht had approached him about their vacant managerial role.
