Tottenham 2-2 Roma: Mats Hummels earns visitors a point at the death in Europa League

Tottenham were denied at the death as a stoppage-time equaliser by Mats Hummels earned Roma a 2-2 draw in an eventful Europa League encounter.

Son Heung-min scored from the penalty spot inside the first five minutes, before Evan N’Dicka headed Claudio Ranieri’s Roma back level midway through the first half.

Spurs regained the lead just 10 minutes later, when Dejan Kulusevski crossed for Brennan Johnson to fire past goalkeeper Mile Svilar.

Roma pushed hard for an equaliser throughout an enthralling second half, and they ultimately got their reward when German veteran Hummels, 35, earned Roma a point from close range in injury time.

Though Roma remain without a win in 14 straight away games in all competitions, it was they who left with their tails up. Tottenham’s failure to get over the line leaves them in ninth place in the Europa League group-stage standings and just outside the automatic places as things stand.

Both sides hit the woodwork multiple times in an end-to-end second half, during which time Roma pushed intently for an equaliser, ultimately getting their reward at the last through Hummels.

The Italian side, all the way down in 12th in Serie A, scored three disallowed goals throughout the match — all of them chalked off for offside — as Stephan El Shaarawy, Manu Kone and then Artem Dovbyk were denied goals either by the linesman or by VAR.

Spurs hit the woodwork through Dominic Solanke, Kulusevski and Pedro Porro, and their lack of clinical finishing allowed Roma to steal a point.

It is now successive matches without a win in the Europa League for Tottenham, who had started their campaign with three straight victories.

Their next fixture in the competition is on December 12 against Scottish side Rangers, whose Thursday night showing saw them thrash Nice 4-1 away from home.
