Tottenham continued to their superb start to Premier League season in remarkable fashion as they scored twice deep into stoppage-time for a 2-1 win over Sheffield United.
Ange Postecoglou picked up the Manager of the Month award for August, so impressive were Spurs in the opening weeks of the campaign, but for so much of the afternoon it looked as if they would be unable to pick up from where they left off before the international break.
After 74 minutes of almost constant Spurs pressure, and save after save from Wes Foderingham, Gustavo Hamer found the bottom corner to stun Tottenham, and give the Blades a lead that remained until the eighth minute of stoppage time.
At that point Richarlison stepped up, powering home from a corner for his first home Premier League goal for the club, before Dejan Kulusevski produced the winner in the 100th minute to spark wild scenes of celebration. Ollie McBurnie was sent off in the closing seconds, shown a second yellow for dissent, to cap a miserable finale for the visitors.
The pattern of the match was set from the very early stages, Foderingham forced into seven saves in the opening 35 minutes of the match alone as the likes of James Maddison and Heung-min Son all forced the goalkeeper into action. Yves Bissouma went as close as anyone to opening the scoring as he drove into the box, but his effort was smothered.
The continued after the break, Spurs dominating possession and pinning the Blades back without turning that pressure into a stream of clear-cut chances. Son had an effort blocked as the ball was cut back to him, while Manor Solomon went close on more than one occasion drifting in off the left.
But it was at the other end that the goal eventually came, a long throw into the box finding Hamer at the back post and he dragged his shot low into the corner, off the far post.
Brennan Johnson was thrown on for his Tottenham debut and he thought he had an equaliser to mark it, as he brought down Bissouma’s ball over the top and lifted a finish into the back of the net. The offside flag was raised just as he wheeled away in celebration.
A late boost for Spurs came in the form of 12 minutes added on, though for eight of those they struggled to build any sort of momentum.
That changed when Richarlison’s header found the back of the net, Tottenham making the most of a corner at the 15th time of asking. And one point became three just a couple of minutes later, as the Brazilian turned provider to set up Kulusevski for the most dramatic of winners.
