Time has failed to heal all wounds for Toto Wolff when it comes to Lewis Hamilton’s controversial defeat in the 2021 Formula One title decider in Abu Dhabi.

F1 fans have become divided over Max Verstappen’s maiden world championship victory, as either something to be ruminated over or simply moved on from.

Mercedes team principal Wolff has admitted that he still struggles to get over the heartbreak despite the FIA restructuring their race director setup and sacking Michael Masi.

“I think about it every day,” he told Motorsport.

“But I have my peace with Max winning the championship, because he's a deserving champion.

“How it panned out, I think I have values around fairness, and especially sporting fairness. This is what provides my fundamental love for the sport. And then that was kicked with the feet on that particular day.”

Wolff added that he is happy with the new system in place to referee F1 races despite teething issues leading to criticism from some drivers.

He said: “They are open minded. They're not opinionated. For me, transparent, honest and have integrity.”
