Tory website plastered with Labour adverts calling on MPs to drop Boris Johnson

Labour has bought up all the advertising on a Conservative supporting website to push the message that Tory MPs ought to dump Boris Johnson.

The Conservative Home website, which acts like an online newsbox for Tory members, has been plastered with Labour adverts.

The image, taken from the government's lockdown-era public service messages, is a face-on portrait picture of a masked-up medic and asks: "Look into her eyes and tell her you still support Boris Johnson."

The advert will be the first thing party members see for the next few days when they log onto the site while Tory MPs return to their constituencies to gauge grassroots reaction to the Sue Gray report.

The move comes after three backbench Tory MPs announced they no longer supported Boris Johnson in the wake of the Sue Gray reports findings.

David Simmonds MP said while the government enjoys public confidence “the Prime Minister does not”.

Simmonds said: “It is time for him to step down so new leadership can take forward the important work of government.”

Simmonds joined backbencher Julian Sturdy who described partygate as a “distraction” in an online comment on Tuesday evening and John Baron MP who on Wednesday morning announced that he is withdrawing support from Johnson.

ConservativeHome describes itself as the UK’s leading independent, Conservative-supporting news site.

It boasts that "our daily readership includes occupants of Downing Street and members of the Cabinet, numerous other Parliamentarians, as well as activists and voters in the UK and abroad".
