Tory MPs earn almost £11 million from 'second jobs' in three years

Tory MPs have raked in almost £11 million from other jobs outside of the parliamentary roles

TORY MPs have earned almost £11 million over the last three years through paid work outside of their parliamentary roles, new figures show.

Between 2019 and 2022, 187 Conservative politicians at Westminster raked in £10,890,250 from so-called "second jobs".

It comes after the Tory government abandoned plans earlier this year to limit MPs earnings from any external work they do.

The figures have been collated by TopRatedCasinos.co.uk from the UK House of Commons Register of Members’ Financial Interests.

Geoffrey Cox earned the most cash totting up £1,835,399.89 from external employment.

One of his most notable roles was providing legal services to Withers LLP, who in turn paid him £703,311.05 for 633 hours of work between January 25 to December 31, 2021, for them.

Former prime minister Theresa May was in second place having earnt £1,564,076.00 from “speaking engagements”.

Heath secretary Sajid Javid was in third as he benefitted from a financial injection of £758,670.

Banks have certainly been keen to acquire his expertise, highlighted by HSBC paying him £30,000 for a pair of speeches totalling four-hours.

Labour MP Dan Jarvis (£693,775.00) and Conservative MP Fiona Bruce (£575,686.01) were among the other MPs who earned more than £500,000 from employment attained outside of their parliamentary role, respectively ranking fourth and fifth.

Daniel Bennett, head of operations at TopRatedCasinos.co.uk said: “Given the economic uncertainty and ever-increasing cost of living, MPs have come under huge fire for receiving a pay rise of £2,212 to their already generous parliamentary salary of £81,932.

“As a lot of people battle price hikes to food, petrol, and energy amid little to no pay rise, it signifies the disparity between MPs and the people they are appointed to serve.

“This disparity is further heightened when assessing the obscure sums MPs are pocketing from jobs undertaken outside of their parliamentary role. Whilst some MPs are making significantly more than others when it comes to this front, it does bring into disrepute the integrity and righteousness of MPs in these very turbulent times for normal citizens.”

Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross, who is also an MP for Moray, has earned more than £31,000 from external work.

The top-earning SNP MP was Steven Bonnar who benefitted from an extra £34,000 over the period.

Boris Johnson pocketed £30,629.91 from work completed outside of his parliamentary role. All his earnings from external employment have come from royalties paid to him for the books he has written or published.

Labour leader Keir Starmer has made an extra £41,127.46, most of which has been through giving legal advice.
