Tory MP's 'car crash' TV interviews over new UK plan to send migrants to Rwanda

Tory MP Simon Hart was slammed on social media on Thursday for a trio of breakfast TV interviews he gave regarding the government's decision to send migrants to Rwanda, as well as the 'Partygate' scandal.

Mr Hart, who has been Secretary of State for Wales since 2019, appeared on Good Morning Britain and Sky News, and also gave an interview to the Today show on BBC Radio 4.

Twitter was awash with comments about his three appearances, with many using the words "car crash" to describe his interviews.

When asked by Sky News presenter Kay Burley what he thought about the Prime Minister overseeing 50 breaches of the law being broken, Mr Hart replied: "I don't know where you got 50 from... you know more about this than me."

The journalist explained that the number of breaches were included in a statement by the Metropolitan Police, to which Mr Hart said that it was "speculation".

"As I say, you know more about this than me - I am not going to speculate. Seriously, we can't speculate," he stuttered before adding: "You tempted me last week and I probably went too far in speculating."

As the conversation turned to the topic of asylum seekers being sent to Rwanda, Ms Burley asked: "Are we just sending men?"

Mr Hart responded: "Yeah so I think I need to be careful on spelling out the detail, there are some sensitivities around that. But yeah the vast majorities of the issues we're talking about will be for male economic migrants, yes."

Ms Burley then asked: "And will they be adult males?" and when he confirmed they would, she probed: "How do we determine somebody who doesn't have papers whether they're an adult or not?"

Struggling with his words again slightly, Mr Hart replied: "Well that's, as I said, what the Home Secretary is going to be spelling out later on today, so I think we just need to be careful... it's tempting..."

Viewers were quick to comment on the exchange, with one person writing on Twitter: "Kay Burley doing a great job tying Simon Hart in knots. Another useless Minister defending the criminal PM Johnson."

Someone else asked: "D’you think Simon Hart reckons he did a good job on this morning’s interview round? Just caught up with his car crash event on the Today programme..."

A third person tweeted: "Geez saw Simon Hart being interviewed by Kay Burley. What a car crash. Didn't even know there had been 50 fines issued. What planet has he been living on. Trying again to defend the indefensible."

Someone else joked: "I've just seen a terrible car crash. Welsh secretary Simon Hart being demolished by Kay Burley on Sky News."

There were similar tweets about Mr Hart's Good Morning Britain interview with hosts Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins.

One wrote: "Simon Hart - Car crash interview! #GMB," and another said sarcastically: "Simon Hart representing the Govt very well this morning #r4today #BBCBreakfast #kayburley #gmb."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
