Tory MP David Davis says he's '90-odd per cent' certain Lucy Letby is innocent

A senior Conservative has said they are “90 odd per cent sure” Lucy Letby is not guilty of murdering babies and should face a retrial.

Former cabinet minister Sir David Davis said he has spent months looking at the evidence in the child serial killer’s case and that he would even be willing to visit Letby in prison to discuss her case.

Letby, 34 is serving 15 whole-life orders after she was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven more at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016.

The nurse also had an application to appeal against her convictions rejected by the courts earlier this year.

But, Sir David has said he believes the convictions were unsafe and need to be reviewed.

When quizzed on whether he believed the nurse was innocent on GB News, the former Brexit secretary said: “I have spent three months going through the evidence. I think most likely - you can’t be certain - but most likely, like 90 odd per cent, not guilty.”

He added: “The most likely reason is one of two things, either poor management of the hospital, the Royal College found that or a superbug, an investigation found that, or both together that is much more likely. I don’t want to declare her innocent, I want a retrial, do it properly.”

In May, Sir David asked why an article published by the New Yorker magazine that questioned the evidence used in the trial that convicted her, was blocked by a court order and unable to be read in the UK.

Sir David has said he will raise the case in parliament and will seek to have it referred to the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

He previously complained after he was quoted £100,000 to obtain a transcript of Letby’s trial - he later said the price was reduced to £9,000.

But the families of Letby’s victims have criticised ongoing speculation about whether she is innocent - explaining that it has added to their grief and upset.

An inquiry into how Letby was able to carry out her crimes at the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital is currently underway.

The Thirlwall Inquiry into events surrounding Letby’s crimes is expected to sit until early 2025, with findings published by late autumn of that year.
