Tory leadership candidates to go head-to-head in first TV debate tonight

Five Conservative leadership hopefuls are set to face off in the first live television debate tonight following the latest round of the heated contest.

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Kemi Badenoch, Penny Mordaunt and Tom Tugendhat all made it through to the third round of voting which is due to take place on Monday.

Tonight's debate will be the first time the public will see all the candidates lay out their ideas after Attorney General Suella Braverman was knocked out the race yesterday.

Ahead of the debate former Brexit minister Lord David Frost called on Kemi Badenoch to withdraw from the race and throw her support behind Liz Truss.

The MP for Saffron Walden since 2017 received the second lowest number of votes in the second round of the contest on Thursday.

Frost said he wants to see "unity among free marketeers".

He wrote in the Daily Telegraph: "Kemi and Suella Braverman set out convincing programmes, with differing emphases, for change,"

"But Liz's depth of experience, her energy and ideas - as well as the simple fact she has the most votes of the three - put her in the lead.

"It is now time for pragmatism. I urge Kemi to stand down in return for a serious job in a Truss administration."

What time is the Tory TV debate?

The Channel 4 debate is set to kick off at 7.30pm following the news on the channel.

Five candidates will face questions from floating voters and host Krishnan Guru-Murthy during a 90-minute debate which will ask, 'Who's the right choice to be Britain's next Prime Minister?'.

The leadership debate will be available to view on Channel 4 and All 4.

What to expect?

Anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy is expected to probe the candidates on a large number of issues during the debate, from the cost of living crisis to the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

It's expected to be a heated debate with many predicted to launch attacks on Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt.

The two leading candidates in the race will be looking to come out the debate unscathed ahead of the second live discussion on ITV on Sunday evening.
