Canadian rapper Tory Lanez must spend a month under house arrest before his trial in the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.
A Los Angeles judge on Wednesday ordered Lanez, 30, to begin his house arrest on Friday, TMZ reported. He’ll be tracked with a GPS monitor ahead of the trial, which is expected to begin Nov. 28.
Prosecutors wanted Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, to be jailed without bail, according to KCBS. They cited a September incident, in which singer August Alsina claimed that Lanez punched him in the face in Chicago.
Lanez’s defense team argued that no formal charges were filed in connection with that incident, describing it as “unproven,” KCBS reported. Alsina made the claims on his Instagram account.
While the defense wanted Lanez to remain a free man, the judge decided on the middle ground of house arrest.
Lanez is awaiting trial on several charges, including felony assault, in connection with the July 12, 2020, shooting of Megan outside a party in the Hollywood Hills.
Megan, 27, said she was leaving a party when Lanez said, “dance b—” and shot at her feet. The “WAP” artist claimed that immediately afterward, Lanez offered to pay her $1 million for her silence.
“He said, ‘I’m so sorry. Please don’t tell nobody. I’ll give y’all $1 million if y’all don’t say nothing,’” she said in April. “And I’m like, ‘What are you talking about? Why are you offering me money right now? Help me. And if you’re sorry, just help me.’”
Megan, whose legal name is Megan Pete, has said she had surgery at a Los Angeles hospital to remove bullet fragments from her feet.
Lanez has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Back in April, Lanez was briefly jailed after the judge determined he violated the terms of his release by tweeting about Megan. He quickly posted the increased bail.
