The Tory candidate vying for Boris Johnson’s former seat has voted to shut nurseries, raise council tax and increase rent in his local area.
Steve Tuckwell, who is currently a councillor in Hillingdon, London, even opposed measures to help reduce poverty in his community.
The local politician was announced as the Conservative Party’s candidate for Uxbridge and South Ruislip after Mr Johnson resigned as an MP, triggering a by-election.
In January Mr Tuckwell voted against developing a poverty action strategy to help tackle a rise in food bank usage in the area.
And in February the local councillor, who represents South Ruislip ward, voted for a rise in council tax, an increase in social rent and a hike in parking permits from zero to £75.
Mr Tuckwell also voted against a motion demanding Cabinet rethink its decision to close three Early Years Centres in the borough, as well as against a motion calling for his council to recognise Black History Month.
Labour MP Shabana Mahmood, the party’s national campaign coordinator, said: “The Tories have picked yet another empty suit who has delivered nothing for Uxbridge.
“As a councillor he’s voted down measures to support families with the cost of living crisis, jacked up council tax and rent, brought in parking charges, and voted to close local nurseries.
“The last thing Uxbridge needs is another Tory 'yes man' who would rather toe the party line than stand up for local people.
“It’s time for change and voters can send a clear message to this out of touch government that enough is enough.”
It comes as a poll shows the Tories face the biggest by-election defeat in history in Nadine Dorries' seat.
The Opinium survey revealed Labour is set to overturn the former Culture Secretary's 24,663 majority in Mid Bedfordshire, which has been represented by the Conservative party since 1931.
Ms Dorries has not yet officially resigned due to some outstanding documents but confirmed last week she will "definitely be gone" before the next election.
Mr Johnson held a much smaller majority of 7,210 in Uxbridge and South Ruislip.
The disgraced former Prime Minister quit after the Privileges Committee warned him he faced being kicked out of Parliament for misleading MPs over Partygate.
He released a bombshell statement accusing his enemies of trying to "drive him out".
The report later ruled he had lied to parliament and recommended a 90-day suspension.
Responding to his selection last month, Mr Tuckwell said: “I’m honoured to be selected to represent the area I have served since 2018 and grew up in.
“Uxbridge cannot afford a Labour MP who backs Khan’s plan to stop residents living their lives the way they choose and make us pick up the tab for his mistakes, under his Ulez expansion. I’m a local here, and if elected, I will work hard to deliver the rebuilding of Hillingdon Hospital.”
