Tory group announces new candidate for Houston, Crosslee and Linwood as veteran fights for third consecutive term

Renfrewshire's Conservative group has announced a new candidate for the Houston, Crosslee and Linwood ahead of the local election on May 5.

David McGonigle is set to stand for the ward currently represented by Tory Scott Kerr, Labour's Alison Dowling and Jim Sheridan, and the SNP's Audrey Doig.

He is the second new candidate the group has confirmed after revealing Alec Leishman - who stood for office in the botched Paisley Southeast by-election - would be fighting for the chance to represent Erskine and Inchinnan.

Mr McGonigle said he felt compelled to try and become a councillor following the devastating effects of the pandemic and, having lived in the ward, feels passionate about standing up for residents there.

“I am absolutely delighted to have been selected by the Scottish Conservatives in these crucial council elections," he said.

“Having lived in both Linwood and Houston, I am passionate about this ward and know the challenges people are facing on a daily basis.

“The pandemic has affected all of us and it really highlighted to me the importance and value that comes from local communities. That is why I decided to put myself forward for selection and I thank local members for putting their trust in me.

“The SNP has neglected our communities and vital day-to-day services for far too long and has hammered Renfrewshire Council with savage budget cuts. I want to change that and stand up for our communities and ensure they have the resources they need.

“I am excited to get out and about on the campaign trail and speak to as many voters as possible."

The group has also revealed veteran councillor James MacLaren has been re-selected to stand in the Bridge of Weir, Bishopton and Langbank ward on social media.

If he keeps his seat, it would be his third consecutive term at Renfrewshire House.

There was another post on the group's Facebook page saying Jane Strang had been re-selected to stand in the Renfrew North and Braehead area, but this has since been removed.
