Toronto Shooting Linked To Alleged Investment Scam

Toronto police officers investigate reports of gunshots, in Toronto, June 17, 2024. The gunman in the fatal shooting believed the two victims had defrauded his family, his wife said Wednesday,

A tragic shooting incident in Toronto earlier this week has been linked to an alleged investment scam that resulted in the loss of over CDN $1 million for the shooter's family. The gunman, who also lost his life in the incident, believed that the two victims had defrauded his family, according to his wife's statement released through her lawyers.

The shooting took place at a north Toronto office space near a daycare center, resulting in the deaths of a man and a woman, along with the male attacker. The victims have been identified as 54-year-old Arash Missaghi and 44-year-old Samira Yousefi, while the shooter remains unnamed by the police.

Court records reveal that the shooter and his wife had filed a lawsuit against Missaghi and Yousefi, among others, following the alleged syndicated mortgage fraud that led to the loss of CDN $1.28 million. It is important to note that the allegations against the victims had not been proven in court.

Missaghi had previously faced charges in 2018 related to a mortgage fraud scheme valued at CDN $17 million, as part of an investigation known as Project Bridle Path. The ongoing litigation between the parties had deeply impacted the shooter's family, as stated in his wife's released statement.

The wife also mentioned finding a note left by her husband after the shooting, providing insight into his state of mind and the reasons behind his actions. The incident occurred at a business in Toronto's North York neighborhood that specializes in financial transactions, as confirmed by the police.
