'Tories showed lack of care when placing untested patients into nursing homes'

On March 17 the UK recorded the first death from Covid in a care home. In the following four months a further 20,000 residents were to die from the virus.

Sanctuaries became death traps because of a catastrophic failure by this Government.

The High Court today ruled the decision to discharge untested patients from hospital into care homes was illegal.

Boris Johnson and former Health Secretary Matt Hancock claim they were not told of the risk posed by asymptomatic transmission of the virus. This excuse does not wash.

Ministers were warned by SAGE on February 28 and by the chief scientist Sir Patrick Vallance on March 13 that coronavirus could be transmitted by people not displaying symptoms yet they still allowed people to be placed in care homes without testing them first.

Even if you take into account the unprecedented challenge posed by the pandemic, to have condemned so many people to their deaths is nothing short of a national scandal

Jurassic berk

It speaks volumes that a male Tory “frontbencher” brazenly watched pornography in the House of Commons chamber.

Such behaviour is deeply insulting to his female colleagues and shows an arrogant disregard for the voters who elected him.

It also highlights the culture of sexism and misogyny that persists within much of the Conservative Party.

Female politicians told a private meeting of Tory MPs this week that sexism and harassment are commonplace.

The Houses of Parliament may be a historic building but that does not mean it should indulge outdated attitudes. It is time to kick these male dinosaurs out of politics.

Appley ending

Digging by an apple tree Ann Kendrick found her late husband’s wedding ring 37 years after he lost it.

It must have been a Golden Delicious discovery.
