TopGolf boss optimistic as he visits Rutherglen site

The boss of a golfing complex which is set to launch in Rutherglen later this year has hailed the progress of the new site.

Artie Starrs, CEO of TopGolf, paid a visit to the company’s first Scottish venue to check in on progress ahead of its opening.

The company says the brand-new, three level venue in Rutherglen will create a completely new, modern golfing experience in Scotland, including point-scoring games, bars and restaurants in a purpose-built venue.

The American company is creating 300 new jobs for the local area and recruitment for management positions is well underway. Recruitment for hourly paid positions is slated to begin after the summer.

Mr Starrs said the proposed opening of the centre was on track.

He stated: "This is my first trip to our new Glasgow venue and it’s taking great shape as we prepare for our official opening towards the end of the year.

"As the home of golf, Scotland is an important market for us, and I can’t think of a better place to have our first venue in Scotland than the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Glasgow.

"We’ve got a busy few months ahead as we get the venue ready to welcome our first players as we introduce families, friends and golf fans from around the city to the fun and energy of Topgolf."

Topgolf currently operates over 70 venues across the world, and aims to combine both sports and entertainment.

Originally the Rutherglen facility was planned to open in the spring of 2021, but was delayed after the coronavirus pandemic occurred, prompting concern the project could be shelved.

The facility will allow golfers to practice their swing from climate controlled hitting bays 27 feet in the air, with micro-chipped golf balls that players drive towards a series of feature illuminated holes along with a number of other challenges, while there will also be gaming areas and a restaurant.

Topgolf is part of the regeneration programme Clyde Gateway and is backed by South Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Government.
