High-profile Journalist Taylor Lorenz sent shockwaves across the industry when she announced that she's leaving The Washington Post to become a full-time independent journalist.
The now former WaPo digital culture columnist revealed her career change in an introductory post on her new media outlet, User Magazine, via Substack. Lorenz wrote that following the internet and the media's evolution, "it has become clear to me that legacy media is not the right primary environment for the kind of work that I want to do."
Lorenz, who has previously written for a slew of publications including the New York Times, The Daily Beast, and Business Insider, will be using her new platform to dissect and discuss "how people are actually using technology."
"It's about who has power on the internet and how that power is being wielded," she added.
The move comes after The Washington Post launched a review to determine whether Lorenz violated its standards by sharing an Instagram picture of herself with President Biden in the background captioned, "War criminal :(," according to NPR.
Some fans of Lorenz were delighted to hear the prominent journalist had decided to go independent, lauding her decision on social media.
Others, however, shared equally resolute convictions in the opposite direction.
Lorenz also poked fun at her contested career.
