Top UK scientist Sir Jeremy Farrar is to be questioned by the US Congress amid questions of the origins of the coronavirus that causes Covid 19.
Sir Jeremy, an expert in tropical diseases, is head of the Wellcome Trust, which gives millions of pounds to medical research every year and is a former member of Government scientific advisory group SAGE.
He was initially among a group of scientists who said the Covid virus could have come from a lab in Wuhan, reports the Mail.
He later signed an article in medical journal The Lancet saying the idea Covid was manmade was 'implausible' and a conspiracy theory.
The US Committee on Oversight and Reform has asked Sir Jeremy to appear before them and answer questions on the record.
An order sent to Sir Jeremy reads: "Documents in the custody of the National Institutes of Health reveal how a group of scientists, including you, initially believed Covid-19 to be man-made before reversing course and claiming otherwise following discussions with senior government health officials."
Sir Jeremy told the Mail: "The scientific evidence continues to point to SARS-CoV-2 [the Covid-19 virus] crossing from animals to humans as the most likely scenario."
