Top Lanarkshire theatre group to stage Shrek the Musical this autumn

Shrek the Musical is coming to Lanarkshire later this year and the fairytale favourite adventure promises a side-splitting script.

“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…” And thus, begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue.

Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animation film, this East Kilbride Village Theatre show from local theatre group Studio 32 is hilarious fun for the whole family.

Packed with brand new stunning songs and breathtaking costumes, Shrek The Musical proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.

Studio 32 director Vikki England said: “Shrek is a family favourite and one of the funniest shows I have ever directed, I can’t wait to see our audiences’ reactions. It’s hilarious and a perfect night out.”

Musical director Iain Sinclair added: “We haven’t been able to put on shows for the last couple of years due to the pandemic, it’s great to be back in the Village Theatre, especially with such a fun and entertaining show.

"Everyone needs a laugh out loud night and this show will deliver.”

Studio 32 was established in 1985 by two 16-year-old schoolgirls from East Kilbride, desperate to participate in theatre.

As the name suggests, original productions were limited to smaller studio style formats but as the club grew in numbers andambition, musical theatre became a reality and in 1992 the club performed its first production in the town's Village Theatre.

The opening of the East Kilbride Arts Centre in 1994 provided Studio 32 with another outlet for smaller scale productions and the club have performed more shows in the Arts Centre than any other company.

Today the club membership stands at 100 and with 121 productions completed, Studio 32 continues to be one of the most productive amateur companies in the whole of Scotland.

Recent shows include Spamalot in 2018, 9 to 5 in 2019 and Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs in 2021 with all performances selling out and receiving rave reviews.

Shrek the Musical runs from September 14-17. Curtain up 7.30pm with a matinee performance at 2.30pm on the Saturday.

Tickets start from £16. To book call the Box Office on 01355 261000, or by going online.
