Top four would be a 'bigger' achievement than League Cup win for Newcastle United

Robbie Savage believes Newcastle United will take finishing in the top four and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League over winning the Carabao Cup this season.

Newcastle reached the League Cup final for the first time in 47 years with a 2-1 victory over Southampton at St James' Park on Tuesday, and will face Manchester United at in the final at Wembley Stadium.

The Magpies eliminated Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace, AFC Bournemouth and Leicester City respectively in the earlier rounds, and prevailed 3-1 on aggregate against the Saints.

Eddie Howe's men also sit third in the Premier League, and have gone 15 league games without tasting defeat, and Savage believes finishing in the top four would be a bigger achievement than lifting the League Cup.

"I think Newcastle fans, a day at Wembley, lifting a trophy. They would want that more," the former Wales international told William Hill.

"From a financial and club point of view, and getting better players, Champions League football. To go in with Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, that's what Newcastle fans will want.

"A top four finish would be an incredible achievement, more so than winning the League Cup. I won the League Cup, the three-handled cup, it's easy"
