Top forecaster pinpoints day to expect 'short lived weather event' as hot plume of 'dangerous' heat nears Ireland

Ireland is set for a week of glorious sunshine as a band of warm air moves across the country and temperatures reach highs of 29 degrees.

As we move towards the weekend, things will heat up further with a "short lived weather event", causing Spain, Portugal, France and the UK to scorch in possible 46 degree conditions.

A forecaster has pinpointed the arrival of the "dangerous" heat as Sunday will see the height of the sizzling weather in Ireland, with some areas nearing maximum temperatures of 30 degrees.

They said: "Weather models continue to show a risk of a hot plume around the 17th. Mid thirties in England and possibly up to 29c in Ireland in a worse/best case scenario depending on your outlook. Certainly one to keep an eye but it will be a short lived event."

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has said conditions will remain dry in most areas today with a mix of cloud and some spells of hazy sunshine. However, cloud will continue to thicken across the west and north, bringing patchy rain or drizzle to the northwest later this evening.

Cloud and patchy rain or drizzle will extend southeastwards across the country, and some mist and coastal fog will occur at times.

A humid night with lowest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees in a light southerly or variable breeze.

Tuesday will start mainly cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle. Brighter conditions along with just isolated showers will then extend from the west during the afternoon and evening.

Maximum temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees. Light southwest winds will gradually veer northwest as the rain or drizzle clears.

Clear spells and just a few light showers on Tuesday night. A fresher night than of late with lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in a moderate northwest breeze.

There will be a few showers in Connacht and Ulster on Wednesday, along with sunny spells.

Across Leinster and Munster, it will be largely dry with long spells of sunshine. Top temperatures will range from 17 to 23 degrees, warmest in the southeast.

Generally, dry early on Thursday with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. However, it looks set to become mostly cloudy later in the day, with patchy rain affecting parts of the west and north.

Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees in a moderate westerly breeze. Patchy rain affecting parts of Ulster on Thursday night.

Elsewhere, it looks set to be mainly dry with some clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in a moderate southwest breeze.

There will be a good deal of cloud about on Friday with the chance of some light showers or drizzle in parts of the west and north.

The best chance of sunshine in the east and south. Top temperatures ranging 19 to 24 degrees, warmest in the east of the country in a moderate southwest breeze.
