Top five baby names going extinct in the UK

These are the baby names going extinct in the UK.

Celebrity and seasonal names are often popular with new parents when they are looking for inspiration to name their child. While names like August for boys and Nova for girls are sky-rocketing in popularity, others are in danger of vanishing becoming extinct.

The life insurance team at Comparethemarket analysed data from the Office for National Statistics to reveal the most popular spring and summer-inspired names, as well as those that have fallen out of favour in recent years. Additionally, they looked at celebrity-inspired names to see which stars are shaping the naming landscape.

The girls name seeing the biggest drop in popularity since 2011 is Varsha, followed by, Brooke, Tamar, Lucy, and Chloe. For boys names, the biggest drop falls have been in the name Arun, followed by, Dayton, Dylan, Owen, and Kai.

In contrast, other seasonal baby names have jumped in popularity. The girls name seeing the biggest rise, with a 7,129% increase, is Nova, followed by Aura, Primrose, Parker, and Juniper, and the boys names are August, Hunter, Axel, Parker, and Ash.

Celebrity-inspired names are also increasing in popularity. For girls, the names on the rise are Reign, Winter, Monroe, Aurora, and River, and boys they are Bowie, Bear, Arlo, Bodhi, and Apollo.

Anna McEntee, from the life insurance team at Comparethemarket, said: “Choosing a baby name is a very personal and exciting decision for families. It's fascinating to see baby name trends change over time, with old favourites like Lucy and Chloe falling out of fashion, and more unique names such as Nova gaining popularity.

"Whether you opt for a traditional name or something a little more unusual, hopefully, our research will help to inspire the perfect name for your bundle of joy.”
