Top artists who shot music videos in Glasgow from Liam Gallagher to Janet Jackson

Loads of well-known artists have selected Glasgow as the backdrop for their music video down the years, each of them making use of the city's unique vibe.

It's yet another reason why Glasgow is well worth its status as one of the world's best cities for music.

Stretching right back to the early MTV era, everyone from Janet Jackson, Simple Minds and Liam Gallagher have used Glasgow as the place for their promos. It's a fascinating list - let's take a closer look.

Janet Jackson - You

American pop legend Janet Jackson was at the peak of her powers in the 1990s and chose Glasgow as the location for the promo video of her single You. The music vid was shot at the SECC Arena on June 2, 1998 in front of a select group of fans.

Paolo Nutini - New Shoes

Paisley's finest Paolo Nutini broke through in 2006 with a song that still remains one of his signature hits. New Shoes was shot in Shawlands and features classic Glasgow sandstone tenements as the backdrop as oor Paolo struts his stuff towards the camera.

Belle and Sebastian - The Wrong Girl

Glasgow indie pop outfit Belle and Sebastian have long had a cult following and have been known for their DIY approach to making videos. Released in 2000, The Wrong Girl is just one of a string of Belle music videos that have been filmed in and around Glasgow. The video features a shot of the city's iconic Duke of Wellington statue on Queen Street, complete with traffic cones-a-plenty.

Amy Macdonald - Pride

Bishopbriggs songwriter Amy Macdonald has been one of Scotland's brightest talents over the past decade. In 2012 she shot the video for her single Pride from a city centre rooftop overlooking George Square.

The Fratellis - Whistle For The Choir

As one of The Frats' signature anthems, Whistle For The Choir has been a fans' favourite of the Glasgow group's since its release in 2006. The video was shot entirely on location around Glasgow.

The Snuts - Glasgow

Indie guitar bands are rather thin on the ground these days compared to yesteryear, but carrying the torch for the modern age is West Lothian band The Snuts. In 2015 their debut single happened to be a paean to the best city in Scotland - no prizes for guessing where it was filmed.

Jake Bugg - Seen It All

British singer songwriter has often revealed a love for Glasgow and so it proved in 2012 with the release of Seen It All, which was filmed around various locations in the city, including the Barras.

Simple Minds - Waterfront

As one of the biggest bands to have ever emerged from Glasgow, Simple Minds were careering towards stadium rock in the mid-1980s. The waterfront alluded to in Waterfront is indeed the River Clyde. The classic tune was later used by the BBC as the theme tune to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Liam Gallagher - Come Back To Me

Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher returned to the scene of his old band's discovery in 2017. The single Come Back To Me was shot at King Tut's, where local record label mogul Alan McGee signed Oasis in 1993 after seeing them play a short impromptu set.
