What has been in the news this year - (Standard)

The Standard can reveal its top 10 most read news stories for 2024 - and it’s not the British election, the Paris Olympics or even Brat summer that has come out top.

Hundreds of thousands of you have clicked on articles since January 1, but many of the most read stories have been from the final quarter of this year.

With New Year’s Eve falling on Tuesday, here are the most read articles from the year that was - with all data being correct up until December 30.

Officially the most read travel blog of the year, there was big interest in July when commuters were hit by the Elizabeth line being closed. This is how it played out.

9. UK riots LIVE: Keir Starmer holds further Cobra meeting as PM vows 'sole focus' to stop riots - by Josh Salisbury, Lydia Chantler Hicks and Jacob Phillips

The most read live blog of the year came after the prime minister held Cobra meetings in response to the riots across the UK.

This is the story which went live all day on August 8.

Search interest in the generations that people are part of showed no sign of abating in 2024, with this story carrying over and getting hundreds of thousands of views.

An update was that baby boomers are in worse health than the generations before at the same age despite living longer, a study has shown.

It is now upon us, but a few months ago passengers were warned to avoid Euston for 10 days over Christmas due to engineering work and other station closures.

July was abuzz with news and rumours about what might have happened to Jay Slater, a British teenager who went missing while on holiday in Tenerife.

This story from July 6 was the latest from a contact who claimed to have seen the 19-year-old in an Airbnb. Sadly, Mr Slater was later found to have died from suspected head injuries.

1. Boeing jet forced into emergency landing after passengers 'start bleeding from ears and noses’ - by Matt Watts

On September 19, a US Delta Air Lines flight from Salt Lake City to Portland, Oregon, was forced to make an emergency landing.

The original story was the most read of 2024 across all Standard channels, taking in more than 957,000 views since it was published.
