Top 10 most memorable Met Gala outfits

The Met Gala is fast approaching, so we're taking a look back at some of the most memorable outfits from previous years.

The event is one of the most important in the fashion calendar, with huge-name celebrities attending the event hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour. The Gala is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, which is why guests are encouraged to attend in elaborate outfits.

Each year has a different theme, with this year's theme celebrating legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld. Anna Wintour chooses the theme each year, as well as controlling the guest-list and overseeing the entire event.

Chadwick Boseman

A lot of male celebrities receive heavy criticism online for wearing a simple tuxedo to the Met Gala, particularly when there are so many amazing gowns being showcased. Chadwick Boseman proved that it's not just women that can get creative with their looks in this outfit in 2018.

The white and ivory Versace suit with gold cross embellishment was perfect for the 'Heavenly Bodies' theme that year.

Jared Leto

2019's Met Gala celebrating Camp was interpreted in a lot of different ways by different celebs, and some received high praise for nailing the brief. Jared Leto was not among them, with some arguing his lifelike head that he carried onto the red carpet with him didn't fit with the 'camp' theme.

His Gucci long red turtleneck dress, accessorised with a dangling string of diamonds, along with the head, was straight from Gucci's fall-winter 2018 fashion show, and Jared looked like he could have walked straight off the runway and into the Gala.

Blake Lively

Fashion fans always know they can count on Blake Lively to nail a Met Gala red carpet and her 2022 outfit was no exception. The theme last year was In America: An Anthology of Fashion, and Blake stole headlines with a major dress reveal part way up the carpet.

Her Versace dress began the night with a long copper coloured train with a huge bow at the back, which she (with a little help) undid to reveal a pale blue train, and she had matching gloves to boot.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian always grabs attention at the Met Gala, and made headlines before she even stepped out last year over wearing Marilyn Monroe's "Happy Birthday Mr President" dress on the runway. She was later accused of permanently damaging dress after posting about the diamonds falling off at the Gala.

The dress was originally designed by Jean Louis, and is made of a sheer, flesh coloured fabric which has 2,500 shimmering rhinestones sewn into it.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky

Not all outfits are memorable for the right reasons, and that's true of this look from Rihanna and A$AP Rocky's 2021 look. Another pair that many believe missed the mark on the Camp theme, their oversized outfits were deemed to casual for the event, with people claiming they could easily create the same thing at home.

Rihanna's all black Balenciaga gown, complete with a black beanie hat, complimented A$AP Rocky's quilt-inspired coat.

Zendaya

We've all had a dream of looking like a real-life Disney princess on a red carpet before, and no one has done it better than Zendaya did in 2019. She even had a tiny clutch bag in the shape of Cinderella's carriage, and there's nothing more campy than that.

Her light-up Tommy Hilfiger dress gave her a scene-stealing moment as her stylist Law Roach, appropriately dressed as her fairy Godmother, used a wand to activate the lights built into the garment.

Beyonce

Where Beyonce goes, the rest of us must follow, and her dress for the 2016 Met Gala theme Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology was no exception. Many were concerned she wouldn't be able to top the nude illusion dress she wore for the 2015 Gala, but she proved them wrong with this look.

Her Givenchy latex puffy sleeved fleshtone gown captured everyone's attention when she stepped out onto the red carpet.

Sebastian Stan

It's important to take risks when choosing your Met Gala outfit, but maybe Sebastian Stan should try and play it a little more safe this year. The 2022 theme In America: An Anthology of Fashion also came with the tagline dress-code 'Gilded Glamour', which this is definitely not.

He took to the red carpet in a Valentino outfit made up of a pink coat, pink shirt, pink trousers, pink sunglasses, pink trainers, and even pink socks.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga's 2019 Camp look also involved a 16 minute entrance, which is exactly how long the outfit deserved. She first arrived in a fuchsia pink cape coat that was made from a whopping 25 yards of fabric, before she removed that to reveal a black, strapless, bustier gown.

The show wasn't over yet though, because she took THAT off to show she was wearing a shocking pink gown underneath, and then she finally took that off and wore a sparkly black bra and knickers to end.

Billie Eilish

Fashion might not spring to mind for most people when they think of Billie Eilish, as her usual style involve big baggy t-shirts and loose trousers to perform and do interview in. That's what made her 2021 Met Gala dress so memorable for fans, when she stepped out in an Old Hollywood glamour dress.

She worse a blush ballgown designed by Oscar de la Renta, inspired by Marilyn Monroe's Oscars dress from back in 1951.
