Top 10 highest-paid footballers in world as Liverpool star Mohamed Salah hits £35m mark

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is now the fifth highest-earning footballer in the world when salary and endorsements are included, according to a new report.

Analysts at US sports business website Sportico looked at the highest-paid players across world football through a combination of both their weekly wage and also the value of the commercial endorsement deals that they had in place.

Salah, 30, penned a new three-year deal with the Reds during the summer, putting an end to more than a year of speculation surrounding his Anfield future, with reports suggesting his weekly wage was now in excess of £350,000, a sum of just over £18m per year.

His new deal and revenues from endorsements with the likes of Vodafone, Adidas, Pepsi, Uber and electronics company Oppo mean that he is expected to receive £34.8m ($39.5m) over the course of the 2022-23 season.

That sum is high enough to put him ahead of five others in the top 10; Eden Hazard, Andres Iniesta, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Antoine Griezmann. He is, however, some way behind fourth place on the list, occupied by Neymar Jnr ($91m), while Lionel Messi ($110m) and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo ($113m) occupy second and third respectively, now toppled Kylian Mbappe ($125m), who plays alongside Messi and Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain.

It is at Liverpool where Egypt international Salah has made the transition into a world-class footballer having failed to truly ignite at AS Roma and particularly Chelsea, having burst onto the European scene with Swiss side Basel after being signed in 2012 from Al Mokawloon in his homeland.

Salah was identified in 2017 as having all the necessary attributes to thrive in a Jurgen Klopp system and the Reds paid an initial £36.5m for his services in a deal that proved to be a bargain as he raised the bar upon his arrival at Anfield and embarked on a remarkable run that has seen him bag 163 goals in 263 game.

He was pivotal in the Liverpool teams that won the 2019 UEFA Champions League and 2019/20 Premier League while he became the second fastest player to reach 150 goals for the club, after Roger Hunt.

Salah's commercial appeal is global and has helped the Reds grow in different markets. His position as the most prominent Muslim football in the world and one of African football's greatest players past or present makes him a hugely marketable proposition for some firms looking to establish themselves in territories where Salah commands huge popularity.
