It’s Easter. That means a long weekend, copious amounts of chocolate, time in the garden if the weather is merciful — and traditionally — fish on Good Friday.
That tradition dates back to ancient times when meat was seen as the food of celebration — and celebrating was not on the menu on the day Jesus died. So, the Church directed Christians to eat more everyday food, which often was fish in those days.
Now, for those of us who still follow the tradition, some form of fancy salmon and asparagus could be gracing your table this weekend. But for a lot of people, you can’t beat the simplicity and convenience of fish and chips.
