A NSW Mid North Coast man has faced court today charged over an alleged $700,000 online business scam against a Sydney-based law firm.

Anthony Gerard Kent was arrested at a home in Toormina on February 23 after a 10-month investigation by the state's police cybercrime squad.

The 58-year-old has been charged with knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.

Police said the investigation began after a Sydney-based law firm reported it had been subject to a business email compromise scam.

Police also said investigators discovered that an employee of the firm had unknowingly transferred electronic funds into a fake account.

Police will allege in court that Mr Kent received stolen funds and dealt with the proceeds of crime valued at $709,198.

Mr Kent was self-represented during a brief mention at Coffs Harbour local court today.

The court heard he was applying for Legal Aid representation.

Magistrate Theresa Hamilton told Mr Kent to seek legal advice before the matter was next heard on April 11.
