A five-bedroom mansion in the wealthy Melbourne suburb of Toorak has shattered the Australian record for most expensive house sold at auction.
While real estate vendor Kay & Burton would not confirm the final sale price, the palatial property was listed with an indicative price of between $40 and $44 million.
The property, at 47 Lansell Road, boasts many of the luxuries a $40 million property would be expected to, including a tennis court, pool — with a dozen sun lounges — a gym and a home cinema.
Its kitchen includes a wood pizza oven, built-in chicken rotisserie and a teppanyaki grill for when you just want a quiet meal at home.
It was reportedly sold to Chemist Warehouse owner Sam Gance.
The property is nestled on a quiet street in Toorak, but behind its tall hedge the house boasts significant space for entertaining.
"The casual family living room with open fireplace opens through steel framed doors to the covered outdoor terrace, garden and pool for year-round indoor-outdoor entertaining," the property's listing said.
"Upstairs family accommodation includes the sumptuous privately zoned master suite with two walk-in wardrobes and marble ensuite, a guest suite with ensuite, three children's bedrooms … family bathroom and study."
Toorak is one of the most-expensive suburbs in the country, with property researcher CoreLogic last year finding its median house value to be more than $4 million, the seventh-highest in Australia.
It was the only suburb not in Sydney to make the top 10, which was led by Darling Point, Bellevue Hill and Vaucluse.
