'Too many times' - Callum Wilson makes fitness admission ahead of Liverpool clash

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has explained how he hopes to be fit to face Liverpool this weekend.

The Reds take on Newcastle on Saturday in their next match in the Premier League. Liverpool are currently in ninth place in the table and nine points adrift of the top four, with a game in hand.

Liverpool beat Everton on Monday night to get their first victory in the top flight in 2023. They take on Newcastle who occupy fourth place, and have drawn their last three league fixtures.

Wilson has been suffering from a minor hamstring injury in recent days. He missed the clash against his former club Bournemouth last weekend, but Newcastle boss Eddie Howe explained that he hopes to have his striker back available soon.

"Callum just has a minor hamstring complaint. We think he'll miss this game, we'll hope to get him back for the next one. Yeah [not long term], fingers crossed," said Howe, prior to Newcastle’s draw with Bournemouth.

Now Wilson, speaking on the Footballer’s Football podcast, has explained the injury from his point of view, and how he hopes to be fit to face Liverpool. The striker missed the reverse fixture at Anfield in October with a similar injury, with the Reds claiming a dramatic 2-1 win.

Wilson said: “Well, yeah (injury scare) we spoke about the game, the big build-up to it, I was so excited, then basically in training felt a bit of tightness in my hamstring, as you do, working hard, worked hard in the previous game against West Ham.

“For me, I don't take no risks anymore. Too often than not I'll be 80 per cent fit, declare myself available to play then 20 minutes in end up pulling up with something.

“Too many times it's happened and I'm not going to cross that bridge again.

“I felt something, decided it was best to give it a rest then we have another big game coming up against Liverpool and we have a cup final too.”
